Stone Carving , Felted Vessels, Collage and other fun Mixed Media Artworks
Once I started carving stone I couldn't stop. When I pick up my hammer and chisel, my goal is to create simple abstract sculptures that showcase the beauty of the stone. I love it when the stone appears to be bending, flowing, pliable and touchable. "Emerging Torso" is Magnesite Marble on Granite Base.
As the sculpture evolves, I try to visualize and understand what the grain of the stone contributes; what the stone is capable of; and what I can do to showcase the stone in the finished sculpture. "Fiona" is sculpted from beautiful Picasso Marble.
When I want to create with a softer medium, working with wool fiber is so enjoyable. I infuse wool roving with handmade paper; shape and go through a wet felting process that produces these lovely felted vessels.
There is no limit to experimenting with rolls of plaster gauze and Plaster of Paris. I've made several of these whimsical containers. Plaster also makes a great base for collage or other mixed media art forms.
Stitching on paper and fabric, dipping it in plaster or clay slip, wrapping with thread, attaching rusty bits from my Dad's shop. Everything comes together when framed and hung in a collection.
